Effects of source languages on Swedish translation students’ socialisation processes

This article reports on a longitudinal focus group study of two groups translation students aimed at investigating their socialisation into the profession. The followed same MA programme in Translation Studies Swedish university but worked with different source languages (SL): Japanese and English. data were analysed thematically following Braun Clarke, point departure Weidman et al.’s model its three core elements: knowledge acquisition, investment, involvement. findings show that groups’ SLs played crucial role profession, affecting all elements to various degrees. can be described as either pertaining personal reasons or institutional constraints. Recognising language low diffusion resources context provides an explanation for these findings. Finally, implications translator education are discussed.
